About Sustainable Narxoz

Now, more than ever, there is a growing consensus of the interconnectedness of humankind and the natural world. The Corona Virus and rising global temperatures due to climate change are just a few of the many examples on how our actions affect the world around us. Sustainable development requires long-term systems thinking that drives social and environmental prosperity for humanity. World leaders have now recognized that fact and set out a road map for future development of the planet under the umbrella of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (2015-2030). These goals are an unprecedented commitment by leaders from around the globe to put sustainability as the overarching theme for human development encompassing the triple bottom line: economy, society and the environment. Higher education plays a fundamental role in the achievement of these Goals by ensuring students acquire the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute to the rapid demand by employers for sustainability competencies in the workplace, and across fields. With the strong leadership of our Rector Dr. Stanislav Buyansky, Deans of Schools including Dr. Ewan Simpson from the School of Society Technology and Environment, Narxoz University has become one of the first higher education institutes in the region to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of University life including curricula, strategic documents, research and campus operations. While sustainability challenges at times may seem overwhelming, it will take a concerted effort by everyone of us to create a better world we all hope for and want. The Sustainable Kazakhstan Research Institute (SKRI) in collaboration with the Narxoz University management, staff and students aim to help contribute to this vision through activities at Narxoz University and in our larger community in Almaty. We also seek to prepare students for the jobs of the future which will inevitably put sustainability at the foundation of their operations. I would like to thank the members of the Narxoz Sustainability Committee for their contribution and hard work in the development and future implementation of the Sustainability Strategy. I am also honored to be a part of this process and look forward to engaging with all of our stakeholders in the exciting years to come.
